devStl Tools is a new application developed by the devCad Team.
It will be released in some days.
devStl Tools will include a collection of features to view, modify, edit and manage Stl files.
The first Alpha 1 release will include:
- Boolean operations for STL files: Union, Intersection and Subtraction
- A special funcion to create 2 positive or negative molds from a given STL files. This function will include the possibility to add reference holes to both Molds.
Version by version will be included other features like:
- Moving-rotating-scaling-mirroring a stl fle
- Splitting a stl solid in two or more parts, also with reference holes and pins to reassemble them
- Functions to check and correct stl files with bad geometries
- Offset functions
- Section functions, to create a 2D shape cutting a stl solid by a plan
- Other functions requested by users or by sponsor of the application.

This is a great addition to the existing software generating stl files. Thank you! I am having a problem though with the scaling, when I try to add alignment holes to an existing mold made with Profili Pro.
Any stl file I open in devStl Tools it is always very small and I have found no way to resize it. What am I missing?
Thanks for any help.

May be you generated the Stl files using inches. Stl files doesn't include the unit of measurement (generally mm or inches), so you must specify it in the application.
I suggest you to generate the Stl files using millimeters as units.
Next releases will include a Scale feature.

Yes that was it.
Designed a wing section mold in Profili Pro using metric measurement and ended up with a file that when converted back to inches in my cam program, was able to put into Cut Viewer Mill to test. Worked very well.
Quite stable, just a few restarts needed along the way learning the extents.
Really a great addition to Profili.
Molte grazie Stefano.

This is not still really useful for Profili, as actually it can just split the molds using a straight plan.
If the wing panel has a washout or dihedral angle, this cannot be a good solution.
I'm going to develop devWing Mold to create Molds for complex full or half wings.
May be I'll add to devStl Tool also an improved Mold making feature, where the splitting plan won't be necessary straight, but also with a shape computed by the application to cross the max extent lines (to avoid undercut problems).. -

Looking forward to devWing Mold. I have noticed the problem of splitting dihedral wing sections, but devStl is good because I can still use the stl. file lofted in Profili to add alignment holes without changing the actual half wing (top or bottom) section created even with washout just by splitting a very small section of the bottom of the existing mold imported into devStl.
Please also consider a feature to add dihedral to a wing by setting the angle of the root rib. It is very expensive and time consuming having to actually cut a huge block of material to achieve the same result. It would be very convenient.
Thanks Stefano.

To do that you can as first rotate the wing to an appropriate angle. Consider that a wing can have multiple dihedral angles, so only the user can decide which horizontal plane he prefers . -

Stefano,
Could you explain a bit further please. I'm not understanding.

.
If you have a half wing with different dihedral angles or a curved dihedral, the angle of the root rib is not the good reference to save material . -

My reasoning is this is how we set dihedral angles with built up panels, by setting the ribs at certain angles even though they are usually built on a flat surface.
Thanks Stefano.

Yes, I understand, but I prefer to have a solution also for the other cases, not only a single panel with simple dihedral . -

Guruji,
Do you have a time frame for devWing Mold?
Mike. -
.
Actually not . -

Stefano,
Are you still considering implementing a washout option when a wing is split and holes added?
regards,

.
That option will be included in devWing Mold, I'm actually developing it.
It's very difficoult to make that feature for a generic Stl file, like do devStl Tools.
